{"id":3473,"date":"2016-07-01T09:01:23","date_gmt":"2016-07-01T15:01:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pianonotes.wpengine.com\/?p=3473"},"modified":"2018-01-30T16:30:04","modified_gmt":"2018-01-30T22:30:04","slug":"shifting-the-focus-of-piano-lessons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pianonotes.piano4u.com\/index.php\/2016\/07\/shifting-the-focus-of-piano-lessons\/","title":{"rendered":"Shifting the Focus of Piano Lessons"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Teaching a Varied Lesson = More Focused Students<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Piano teachers often fall into one of two traps: 1) We try to be so amazingly fun and full of activities and ideas that we miss out on \u201cgood ol\u2019 teaching\u201d or 2) We fall into routines and forget that our little students need to move and re-focus no matter what their disposition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Finding a balance that allows for frequent changes of focus that are still productive and effective is key in providing the best lesson experience for your students.\u00a0And these changes in focus don\u2019t need to be earth shattering\u2026 or even death defying. \u00a0Kids need variety,\u00a0but\u00a0variety can be simple.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>7 simple ways piano teachers can change focus in a piano lesson:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3481 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/pianonotes.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/change-of-focus-copy.jpg\" alt=\"change of focus copy\" width=\"284\" height=\"852\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pianonotes.piano4u.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/change-of-focus-copy.jpg 564w, https:\/\/pianonotes.piano4u.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/change-of-focus-copy-100x300.jpg 100w, https:\/\/pianonotes.piano4u.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/change-of-focus-copy-341x1024.jpg 341w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/>1. <strong>Include listening activities in your lessons:<\/strong>\u00a0 A listening game that encourages your students to learn how to actively listen to music. Listening skills an essential part of musical education and are a great way to take a playing break mid-lesson.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">2. <b>Designate an area of your studio as the \u201cgame zone\u201d <\/b>and <a title=\"Piano Theory Games\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teachpianotoday.com\/piano-theory-games-and-exercises\/\">play your theory games <\/a>away from the bench. A slight change in environment can be just what your student needs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">3.\u00a0<strong>Invite parents in for demonstrations:\u00a0<\/strong>Inviting someone else into the room shifts focus, but is also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachpianotoday.com\/2014\/03\/20\/your-guide-to-invested-involved-and-inspired-piano-parents\/\">a great way to include parents in home practice<\/a> by giving them first-hand knowledge of what their child is working on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">4.\u00a0<strong>Break pieces up into small chunks and play \u2018Simon Says\u2019<\/strong>: Use colored markers, stickers or tape to highlight different sections of his current piece. It\u2019s most effective if you seek out melodic or rhythmic patterns and color cod them accordingly. \u00a0Then say \u201cSimon says play a blue section. \u00a0Simon says play a yellow section. \u00a0Simon says play a purple measure.\u201d \u00a0Once in awhile throw in a command that doesn\u2019t include \u201csimon says\u201d and see if you can catch them!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">5.\u00a0<strong>Use Technology:<\/strong> As long as your use of a\u00a0tablet\u00a0or smartphone is purposeful (meaning you\u2019re using it for a specific purpose, not just because it is \u201ctechnology\u201d) then this can provide a great brain-break. And you don\u2019t always need to be playing games. Recording your student playing and then watching it back together, comparing her\u00a0performance with a Youtube performance, playing along with backing tracks, using a notation program as a part of your ear training\u2026 these are all great \u201cnon-game\u201d uses of technology.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">6.\u00a0<strong>Switch Places:<\/strong> Students learn SO much from taking on the role of the teacher. When starting a new piece, switch chairs and plant yourself on the bench. Have your student lead you through the steps of decoding a new piece of music from the teacher chair.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">7.\u00a0<strong>Use a whiteboard<\/strong><strong>:\u00a0<\/strong>There is just something about a whiteboard that kids love.
