Later, he took the position of church organist, but it was not until he saw a performance of<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Giuseppe Verdi\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giuseppe_Verdi\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Verdi<\/span><\/a>&#8216;s<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i><a title=\"Aida\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aida\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Aida<\/span><\/a><\/i><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>that he became inspired to be an opera composer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: Arial;\">In 1880, the Messa di Gloria (Glory Mass), composed at the age of 22, marked the end of Puccini&#8217;s apprenticeship as a composer and the culmination of his family&#8217;s long association with church music in his native Lucca. The work offers fascinating glimpses of the dramatic power that Puccini was soon to unleash on Milan&#8217;s stages. The orchestration and the overall feeling of drama conveyed by his music establish a dialogue with<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Verdi's Requiem\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/redirect.asp?title=Verdi%27s_Requiem&amp;action=edit\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Verdi&#8217;s Requiem<\/span><\/a>and perhaps already constitute a prediction of the future operatic career Puccini would embrace for life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: Arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: Arial;\">From 1880 to 1883 he studied at the<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Milan Conservatory\" href=\"http:\/\/www.8notes.com\/wiki\/redirect.asp?title=Milan_Conservatory&amp;action=edit\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Milan Conservatory<\/span><\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>under<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Amilcare Ponchielli\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amilcare_Ponchielli\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Amilcare Ponchielli<\/span><\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>and<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Antonio Bazzini\" href=\"http:\/\/www.8notes.com\/wiki\/redirect.asp?title=Antonio_Bazzini&amp;action=edit\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Antonio Bazzini<\/span><\/a>. In<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"1882\" href=\"http:\/\/www.8notes.com\/wiki\/1882\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">1882<\/span><\/a>, Puccini entered a competition for a one-act opera. Although he did not win,<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i><a title=\"Le Villi\" href=\"http:\/\/www.8notes.com\/wiki\/redirect.asp?title=Le_Villi&amp;action=edit\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Le Villi<\/span><\/a><\/i><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>was later staged in<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"1884\" href=\"http:\/\/www.8notes.com\/wiki\/1884\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">1884<\/span><\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>at the Teatro dal Verme; it also caught the attention of the publisher<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Giulio Ricordi\" href=\"http:\/\/www.8notes.com\/wiki\/redirect.asp?title=Giulio_Ricordi&amp;action=edit\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Giulio Ricordi<\/span><\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>who commissioned a second opera (<i>Edgar<\/i>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: Arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: Arial;\">Not only was<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Manon Lescaut\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manon_Lescaut\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Manon Lescaut<\/span><\/a>, his third opera, a great success, it also begin his relationship with the<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Libretto\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Libretto\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">librettests<\/span><\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Luigi Illica\" href=\"http:\/\/www.8notes.com\/wiki\/redirect.asp?title=Luigi_Illica&amp;action=edit\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Luigi Illica<\/span><\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>and<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Giuseppe Giacosa\" href=\"http:\/\/www.8notes.com\/wiki\/redirect.asp?title=Giuseppe_Giacosa&amp;action=edit\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Giuseppe Giacosa<\/span><\/a>, who worked with him on his next three operas. The first of these,<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i><a title=\"La Boh\u00e8me\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/La_Boh%E8me\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">La Boh\u00e8me<\/span><\/a><\/i>(based on a story by<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Henry Murger\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/redirect.asp?title=Henry_Murger&amp;action=edit\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Henry Murger<\/span><\/a>), is considered one of his best works, as well as one of the most romantic operas ever composed. His next opera,<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i><a title=\"La Tosca\" href=\"http:\/\/www.8notes.com\/wiki\/La_Tosca\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Tosca<\/span><\/a>,<\/i><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>was Puccini&#8217;s first foray into<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Verismo\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Verismo\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">verismo<\/span><\/a>.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i><a title=\"Madame Butterfly\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Madame_Butterfly\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Madame Butterfly<\/span><\/a><\/i><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>(based on a play by<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"David Belasco\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/redirect.asp?title=David_Belasco&amp;action=edit\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">David Belasco<\/span><\/a>) was greeted with great hostility at its opening (mostly orchestrated by his rivals), but after some reworking it has become another of his most successful operas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: Arial;\">Composition was slow after this. In 1903 he was injured in an automobile accident. In 1906 Giacosa died. In 1909, there was scandal after their maid was falsely accused by Puccini&#8217;s wife of having an affair with Puccini and then committed suicide. And in 1912, Puccini&#8217;s editor, Ricordi, died.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: Arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: Arial;\">In 1918,<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i><a title=\"Il Trittico\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/redirect.asp?title=Il_Trittico&amp;action=edit\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Il Trittico<\/span><\/a><\/i><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>premiered. This work is composed of three one-act operas in the style of the Parisian<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Grand Guignol\" href=\"http:\/\/www.8notes.com\/wiki\/Grand_Guignol\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Grand Guignol<\/span><\/a>: a horrific episode (<i>Il Tabarro<\/i>), a sentimental tragedy (<i>Suor Angelica<\/i>) and a comedy or farce (<i>Gianni Schicchi<\/i>). Of the three,<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i>Gianni Schicchi<\/i><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>is the most popular and<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i>Il Tabarro<\/i><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>the least.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><i>Schicchi<\/i><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>is sometimes performed as a double-bill with a one act opera such as<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Cavalleria Rusticana\" href=\"http:\/\/www.8notes.com\/wiki\/Cavalleria_Rusticana\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Cavalleria Rusticana<\/span><\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>or<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"I Pagliacci\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/I_Pagliacci\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">I Pagliacci<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: Arial;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 18.0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: Arial;\">Puccini died in<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Brussels\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brussels\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Brussels<\/span><\/a>,<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Belgium\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Belgium\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Belgium<\/span><\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>in 1924 from complications due to treatment for throat cancer.<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Turandot\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Turandot\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Turandot<\/span><\/a>, his last opera was left unfinished; the last two scenes were completed by<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Franco Alfano\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Franco_Alfano\"><span style=\"color: windowtext; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;\">Franco Alfano<\/span><\/a>.
