Bellini gained the patronage of an important impresario, who commissioned\u00a0<em>Bianca e Fernando<\/em>\u00a0for the\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/402883\/Naples\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">Naples<\/a><a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/429776\/opera\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">opera<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The success of this early work led to other commissions.\u00a0<em>Il pirata<\/em>\u00a0(1827), written for\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/326535\/La-Scala\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">La Scala<\/a>, the opera house at\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/382069\/Milan\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">Milan<\/a>, earned him an international reputation. Bellini was fortunate in having as\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/339507\/libretto\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">librettist<\/a>\u00a0the best Italian theatre poet of the day,\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/508458\/Felice-Romani\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">Felice Romani<\/a>, with whom he collaborated in his next six operas. The most important of these were\u00a0<em><a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/94402\/I-Capuleti-e-i-Montecchi\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">I Capuleti e i Montecchi<\/a><\/em>(1830), based on\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/537853\/William-Shakespeare\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">Shakespeare<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/508921\/Romeo-and-Juliet\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\"><em>Romeo and Juliet<\/em><\/a>;\u00a0<em>La sonnambula<\/em>\u00a0(1831;\u00a0<em><a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/548621\/The-Sleepwalker\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">The Sleepwalker<\/a><\/em>); and<em><a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/418210\/Norma\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">Norma<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1831).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>La sonnambula<\/em>, an opera semiseria (serious but with a happy ending), became very popular, even in England, where an English version appeared. Bellini\u2019s masterpiece,<em>Norma,<\/em>\u00a0a tragedy set in ancient\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/227066\/Gaul\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">Gaul<\/a>, achieved lasting success despite an initial failure.<\/p>\n<p>Bellini lived briefly in\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/346821\/London\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">London<\/a>\u00a0in 1833 and then went to\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/443621\/Paris\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">Paris<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There, composer\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/510222\/Gioachino-Rossini\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">Gioachino Rossini<\/a>\u2019s influence secured for him a commission to write an opera for the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre-Italien. The result was\u00a0<em><a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/484032\/I-puritani\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">I puritani<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1835), the last of Bellini\u2019s nine operas; although handicapped by an inept libretto, it is in many ways his most ambitious and beautiful work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bellini\u2019s fame was closely bound up with the\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/59021\/bel-canto\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">bel canto<\/a>\u00a0style of the great singers of his day. He was not a reformer; his ideals were those of\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/257714\/Joseph-Haydn\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">Haydn<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/395455\/Wolfgang-Amadeus-Mozart\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">Mozart<\/a>, and he strove for clarity, elegance of form and melody, and a close union of words and music. Yet with perseverance he corrected some of the grosser abuses of opera then current.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While he subordinated the<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/431249\/orchestra\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">orchestra<\/a>\u00a0accompaniment to the singers and placed upon their voices the responsibility for dramatic expression, his harmony was more enterprising than that of his contemporary<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/169130\/Gaetano-Donizetti\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">Gaetano Donizetti<\/a>, and his handling of the orchestra in introductions and\u00a0<a style=\"font-style: inherit;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/290365\/interlude\" data-ytrk=\"\/548\">interludes<\/a>\u00a0was far from perfunctory.
