{"id":1378,"date":"2013-01-01T08:00:40","date_gmt":"2013-01-01T14:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.piano4u.com\/pianonotes\/?p=1378"},"modified":"2012-12-29T16:15:46","modified_gmt":"2012-12-29T22:15:46","slug":"note-by-note-he-keeps-the-silent-film-era-alive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pianonotes.piano4u.com\/index.php\/2013\/01\/note-by-note-he-keeps-the-silent-film-era-alive\/","title":{"rendered":"Note by Note, He Keeps the Silent-Film Era Alive"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Mr. Oderman in 1964\" src=\"http:\/\/graphics8.nytimes.com\/images\/2009\/02\/15\/nyregion\/15pianist02-190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"238\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mr. Oderman in 1967 with the actress Lillian Gish, who encouraged his piano playing.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>THE NEW YORK TIMES:\u00a0Stuart Oderman, who has performed alongside the likes of\u00a0<a title=\"More articles about Rudolph Valentino.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/v\/rudolph_valentino\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\">Rudolph Valentino<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/person\/12334\/Charles-Chaplin?inline=nyt-per\">Charlie Chaplin<\/a>, leaned against a piano at the Museum of Modern Art and reminisced about some numbers from the 1950s<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe numbers were all written on betting slips, and I\u2019d put the slips on the bottom of a bag, and then I\u2019d put some doughnuts on top of the slips and some powdered sugar on top of the doughnuts and go make my drop, because who is going to stop a 13-year-old kid carrying a bag of doughnuts?\u201d he said. \u201cThe mob guy I worked for, every time he saw how well I hid those numbers, he would say, \u2018That kid, he\u2019s got some real talent.\u2019\u00a0\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By the time Mr. Oderman was running numbers along Belmont Avenue in Newark, where he grew up, he had already developed another talent \u2014 at the keyboard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mob guy I worked for knew I had been taking piano lessons since I was a kid, and so he would often let me play at a neighborhood bar he owned,\u201d said Mr. Oderman, 69. \u201cI\u2019d play Sinatra song after Sinatra song, and if I played \u2018I\u2019m in the Mood for Love,\u2019 that was a signal that meant get out quick, something\u2019s not kosher.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Oderman\u2019s descent into the underworld was halted at 14 thanks to a chance encounter with \u2014 of all people \u2014 the actress\u00a0<a title=\"More articles about Lillian Gish.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/g\/lillian_gish\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\">Lillian Gish<\/a>\u00a0at a showing of one of her most famous movies, \u201cBroken Blossoms,\u201d and for the last half century, he has been an accompanist and composer for silent films. Now one of the few remaining masters of that almost-lost art, he has written four books related to the silent era, which he cannot stop talking about.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI fell in love with silent films at a very young age,\u201d he said. \u201cIn these films, there is a directness and an honesty between actor and audience, all done through gestures and raw emotion, that became a lost art when the talkies began arriving in the late 1920s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Oderman arrived at the Roy and Niuta Titus Theater 1 at the Modern on Feb. 5 to time the score of a coming film. The bright red seats were empty, but he still wore a dark blue dinner jacket. Before long, he was describing that scene from 1954, the one that turned his life around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cut school one day so that I could come to this very theater to watch \u2018Broken Blossoms,\u2019\u00a0\u201d he said. \u201cI was only 14 years old. I sit in my seat, look to my left and Ms. Gish is sitting right next to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u00a0\u2018You belong in school,\u2019 she said to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started talking, and I told her that I loved silent movies and that I would love to have a job like Arthur Kleiner, who was the silent film pianist here at that time. Ms. Gish takes me right over to Mr. Kleiner, who took me under his wing and gave me piano lessons for the next two years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Oderman, who lives in East Orange, N.J., with his wife, Janet Sovey, enrolled at Newark State College (now Kean University), where he majored in English and wrote about music and art for the college newspaper. In his spare time, he played piano \u201canywhere to make a buck,\u201d he said \u2014 \u201cbirthday parties, bar mitzvahs, strip clubs, you name it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During what he called \u201cthe Dirty Dancing era,\u201d he performed alongside comedians like\u00a0<a title=\"More articles about Henny Youngman.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/y\/henny_youngman\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\">Henny Youngman<\/a>\u00a0and Jack Carter in what he described as \u201cB-circuit hotels\u201d in the Catskills.<\/p>\n<p>For far less money, or even no money, he pursued his calling, providing musical accompaniment for silent films at libraries and museums, and eventually writing scores for some of the pictures. In 1968, Mr. Oderman received a call from the Museum of Modern Art. \u201cThey asked me to come in and be the silent theater pianist,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s the one job I had always wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The actress\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/person\/31085\/June-Havoc?inline=nyt-per\">June Havoc<\/a>, 96, who appeared in silent pictures as a child, sang Mr. Oderman\u2019s praises.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have always admired Stuart\u2019s use of his considerable talents as a musician and a writer to serve the art he loves \u2014 the art of silent film,\u201d Ms. Havoc, who lives in Stamford, Conn., said through a personal assistant.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Oderman, who was honored by the museum last month for his 50 years of work with silent pictures, will next perform at the Brooklyn Public Library on March 1, accompanying the 1923 film \u201cThe Extra Girl,\u201d starring\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/movies.nytimes.com\/person\/104650\/Mabel-Normand?inline=nyt-per\">Mabel Normand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ken Gordon, a film curator who heads the silent film program at the library, called Mr. Oderman \u201ca torchbearer from another era.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the people who starred in these silent movies are gone,\u201d Mr. Gordon said. \u201cBut through his fine piano playing, Stuart Oderman has kept their work alive.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE NEW YORK TIMES:\u00a0Stuart Oderman, who has performed alongside the likes of\u00a0Rudolph Valentino\u00a0and\u00a0Charlie Chaplin, leaned against a piano at the Museum of Modern Art and reminisced about some numbers from the 1950s \u201cThe numbers were all written on betting slips, and I\u2019d put the slips on the bottom of a bag, and then I\u2019d put some doughnuts on top of the slips and some powdered sugar on top of the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":1381,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[10,34],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1378","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-articles","category-featured-articles"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
